Hand-Knotted Persian Mashad Large Area Rug

A large Persian Mashad area rug. This supple wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of deep midnight blue, cochineal red, indigo, shades of pink, and cream. The curvilinear rug begins with a large starburst medallion with palmette points and pendants reaching deeply into an open red field. Densely populated with palmettes, vines, morning glories, and other flowers, spandrels are large, reaching nearly to the field’s midpoint. Compound resolved borders include a primary border over midnight blue featuring meandering palmettes and six floral guard strips over lighter colors. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with ivory cotton warp fringe. It is marked on the reverse.
