Excellent Hand-Knotted Antique Kerman Area Rug Circa 1920
Item Details
An excellent antique Kerman area rug, circa 1920. This supple Persian rug is hand-knotted in a palette of cherry red, sapphire, bright blue, pale gold, and pink. It features a large, ornately detailed central pendant medallion filled with petal-like boteh and flowers over an indigo ground. The medallion is surrounded by large, unusual mother/daughter boteh, vase forms, and sprays of flowers with foliate fronds over a glossy red field. The field is framed by elegant and detailed compound floral borders with a narrow, broken inner border and a primary border densely patterned with a variety of boteh forms over an indigo ground. The primary border is flanked by guard borders in the field colors, having patterns of poppy pods and meandering carnation on a taupe field. It has overcast selvedge edges, and finishes at either end with dense ivory wool warp fringe. The rug is untagged.
