Hand-Knotted Persian Shiraz Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Shiraz area rug. This tribal wool rug is rendered in an abrashed palette of madder red, deep indigo, and ivory. It features a rectilinear design that begins with three hexagonal pole medallions, the largest and most complex in the center, the top and bottom populated with dogdan guls enclosed in octagons. The medallions rest on a red field, which is populated with a gul in each corner, hooks, cruciform shapes, and notches representing the corners of four medallions. Compound borders include S shapes and a mirrored sawtooth central border. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with twisted ivory wool warp fringe. The rug is marked on the reverse.
