20th Century Midwestern Style Paint-Decorated Cupboard
Item Details
A 20th century Midwestern style paint-decorated cupboard. The two-piece, flat-back cupboard features a distressed, paint-decorated surface in shades of green and red. The upper section has a projecting cornice above a pair of blind-paneled doors opening to a three-shelf interior. The lower section features a rectangular top over two aligned frieze drawers and two blind, two-door cabinet concealing a two-shelf interior. The cupboard is further embellished with applied roundels, fluted pilasters, diamond-panels, and hand-painted compass motifs. It rises on square legs.
The diamond motifs imitate those used by nineteenth-century furniture makers in the Swiss-German areas of Indiana and Ohio, including Oldenburg, Zoar, and New Bremen.
