An original pastel landscape on paper by noted Cincinnati artist Charles Salis Kaelin (1859-1929). The wooded landscape is done in the artist’s signature style using expressive strokes in a studied and intent manner. signed in the lower left corner, the landscape is presented under glass in a wood frame with a brushed silver finish.
Charles Salis Kaelin was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied at the famed McMiken School of Design with Thomas Noble and John Twachtman before moving to NY where he attended the Art Students League of New York. In the 1890’s Kaelin returned to Cincinnati and exhibited regularly at the Cincinnati Art Museum, then at the encouragement of his friend Frank Duveneck he visited Massachusetts and was completely taken by the rugged coastline and the natural light. He is known for developing a distinctive impressionistic “Divisionist” technique of painting that was referred to as “daring” by his contemporaries. Kaelin’s work can be found in prestigious private collections as well as museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cincinnati Art Museum and The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.

The frame has a few nicks and scratches.
