A Tatanua mask from the New Ireland province of New Guinea. This elaborate polychrome headdress is worn by dancers of the Malagan, a funerary ceremony. This carved wooden piece features a large crest of tufted fibers along the ridge line of the head and an animal face. It is embellished with intense coloring of red, black, yellow, and white. This piece is unmarked by the artist. There are no wear marks on the interior of the mask indicating that it is unused.
