1888 William Alfred Elleby Oil on Canvas "On the Bank"

An 1888 oil painting on canvas by British painter William Alfred Elleby (1856-1932). Titled On the Bank this depicts a fisherman and a standing young boy upon the bank path of the River Medway near the arched medieval stone bridge. The northern half of the Kent village of Aylesford is on the far side, with the half-timbered Tudor houses and the Norman St. Peter and St. Paul’s parish church. This work is signed and dated in the lower corner and presented within an ornate gold tone wooden frame with foliate gesso ornamentation. Gallery labels are attached on verso.

Condition

- the frame has minor scratches and chips throughout; relined; hole in canvas just left of center, near windows of house; craquelure throughout; holes in frame were previous hanging hardware was; gallery stickers adhered to verso.
