Lower Sepik River Valley Carved and Painted Basket Mask
Item Details
A carved mask from the lower Sepik river valley of Papua New Guinea. This mask features highly detailed hand painted features distinctive to the cultures of this region in white and orange on black colored soft wood used by master carvers. The eyebrows and areas around the face are enhanced with inlaid shells. The mask has a woven basket attached to it that covers the back and allows it to be worn by pulling the entire item over the head. The top has bird of paradise feathers, while the ears and nose are detailed with twisted natural fibers. More fibers are attached at the bottom all around to cover the wearer’s shoulders, front and back.
