Edward Hopper Original Signed Etching "Night Shadows"

An original etching by the renowned listed artist Edward Hopper (American, 1882 – 1967), titled Night Shadows. This luminous print is from the Six American Etchings (Series I) and portrays a bird’s-eye perspective of a lone man walking down a shadowy street illustrating Hopper’s signature depictions of modern American life. Hopper applies dark chiaroscuro and cross-hatching to intensify the sense of isolation and drama. This unique etching is the only commercially printed work by Hopper, who produced small editions himself on a personal press. The etching is signed in graphite to the lower right and is presented in a black hued wooden frame with neutral matting behind glass.

Hopper is considered one of the most important American Realist artists. He studied at the Institute of Art and Design and was based in New York City. Although he traveled to Europe often during the peak of the Cubism and Surrealism movements, Hopper was drawn more to the Classic ideals of the Old Masters. Best known for his American genre paintings of rural landscapes and isolated figures, Hopper produced seventy prints during 1915 to 1928, until he directed his attention to painting exclusively.

Condition

- visible toning and discoloration on print; one small tear at the side of the print visible from the verso; tape marks visible from the verso; a few marks and chips on frame; wire to verso partially detached; backing needs reattached; a few marked behind glass; wear to the reverse of frame. The impression is not laid down, and is overall toned to verso. Early tape residue evident, and paper glued to matting in upper perimeter (2 areas). The work has been largely untouched and remains in early black rimmed frame, possibly original frame.
