David Willaume 1734 London Sterling Silver Sauce Boat

An antique sterling silver sauce boat. This piece was produced in London by silversmith David Willaume in 1734. Records show that David Willaume first began marking silver in 1721. The shape with restrained Rococo scrollwork follows a shell form and reflects much of the line was fashionable on the continent in the first part of the eighteenth century. There are impressed marks reading ‘I’ for 1734, a leopard’s head signifying London, a lion passant the standard mark for sterling silver, and ‘DW’ the maker’s name. A scrolled monogram contained in an foliate form roundel is present. The total approximate weight is 17.840 ozt.

Condition

- some minor surface wear with faint markings and tarnishing. The piece is monogrammed.
