South American Style Painted Wood Carving

A South American style painted wood carving. This piece depicts a hunting scene of a tribe catching what appears to be an alligator. The scene is rendered with stylized figures and Native patterning carved across the composition in a palette of yellow, green, black, orange and red. A band of illegible text is seen to the lower margins of the composition. The image is contained in a carved border that features a diamond and sawtooth pattern across the surface. To the verso is affixed hanging rope.

Condition

- some wear to surface and splintering to verso of wood edges; staining to verso of wood.
