Paul Chidlaw Original Mixed Media Painting on Board

Item Details

An original mid-20th century mixed media painting on panel by well-listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989), titled The Cloth Dyers of India. The painting is a stunning departure from Chidlaw’s usual highly-abstracted subjects, depict a figural composition made of three forms waving vivid cloth through the air. The painting is completed in warm shades of red, orange, pink, and white oil paint against a cool periwinkle background, with stark black pastel accents. The painting is signed in purple to the lower right, and is signed and titled in pencil to the verso of the frame. It is presented in a wooden frame with cast surface embellishments, seamless corners, antiqued gold tone finish, and a hanging wire. Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
