1862 to 1917 U.S. Military Manuals

A collection of antique U.S. military manuals. This collection includes thirteen titles with publication dates ranging from 1862 to 1917; all except for one are handbound. Highlights include the 1862 manual Infantry Tactics by Brigadier General Silas Casey, who served in the Union army during the Civil War but whose manuals were used by both sides; it was published by D. Van Nostrand, 192 Broadway, New York, and includes the following description near the bottom of its title page: ‘Schools of the Soldier and Company. Instructions for Skirmishes and Music.’ Also included are a Manual for Noncommissioned Officers and Privates of Infantry, 1917; the War Department’s Infantry Drill Regulations U.S. Army revised 1904; Firing Regulations, 1906; a manual on swordsmanship; and more. One volume, the Army’s Drill Regulations and Service Manual for Sanitary Troops, 1914, bears the handwritten name of Lucius P. Farmer, who was a military surgeon.

- to fair; some staining and discoloration to boards; foxing; some bowing; one manual shows the beginning of redrot; Infantry Tactics is in fair condition with foxing and damp rot, a torn away flyleaf, handwriting in the pastedowns, and damage to spine and headcap.
