A group of antique books with leather covers on physiognomy and religion. The titles include The Self-Instructor In Phrenology and Physiology (1894), by O. S. and L. N. Fowler, and published in New York by Fowler & Wells Co., is a revised edition of an 1889 book. This title was revised by Nelson Sizer. A similar title is A New Physiognomical Chart of Character (1872) by J. Simms, M.D. The title page is marked ‘Nature furnishes a Free School unbiased by Dogmas’. It was published by Dunn and Wright, Printers, Glasgow, Scotland. The Bridgewater Treatises: Treatise II (1833) by John Kidd, M.D., an Oxford professor, was published in Philadelphia by Carey, Lea & Blanchard. It is subtitled ‘On the adaptation of external nature to the physical condition of man’.
