Bob Guccione Graphite and Ink Drawing on Paper of Stage Performance

Item Details

A graphite and ink drawing on paper of a stage performance by listed American artist Bob Guccione (New York, 1930 – 2010). This work features a large well-dressed man singing on stage with a podium in front of him and a line of dancing showgirls behind him. A portrait bust is set to the right against the curtain; parts of words are visible to the upper left and lower right, which appear to read ‘high school’ and ‘high university’; outlined heads of audience members are faintly visible to the lower right. To the verso are a couple preliminary sketches of heads in profile. The drawing is not signed; it is not mounted and remains unframed.

Bob Guccione began his artist endeavors in 1949 when he traveled to Italy with basic paint supplies and a few dollars. Despite never receiving formal artist training he premiered his artwork at the Nassau County Museum of Art and the Butler Institute of American Art. Many of his original sketches and painting were created during his time traveling through Rome, Paris, and London during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Later in life, he founded Penthouse Magazine which halted his career as an artist.
