Art Cummings Mixed Media Cartoon on Paper "What Seems to Be..."

Item Details

A colored pencil and watercolor cartoon on paper titled What Seems to Be the Problem by well-listed artist Art Cummings (United States, 1922 – 2012). The work illustrates the storefront of a pawn shop where an A + C Sign employee is asking the titular question to the pawnbroker. Humorously, the traditional pawnbroker sign has been made into a phallic and suggestive shape. Signed by the artist to the lower right corner. Mounted onto mat board and presented without a frame. The item included in this lot comes from The Guccione Collection, sold exclusively through EBTH by digital media company Jerrick. The item originates from the personal archives of Bob Guccione; media mogul, artist, and founder of Penthouse magazine.

Children’s book illustrator and cartoonist Art Cumings was a frequent contributor to both Penthouse and Omni magazines, as well lending illustration duties to authors such as Dr. Seuss and Shari Lewis. Cumings gained popularity for his satirical magazine cartoons, including series such as “Balloonheads” and “The Artist”.
