Handwoven Bokhara War Rug

Item Details

A handwoven Bokhara soumak war rug. This flatweave and embroidered rug begins with four vertically arranged central medallions in a palette of madder red, green, blue, and tan on a large navy field. The field is further populated with guls and, notably, with missiles in place of the lateral notches characteristic of traditional Bokhara patterns. Framing the field are compound borders including a running dog outer rail. Edges are overcast. The rug finishes at either end with short kilim skirts and thick ivory warp fringe. The underside has loose threads characteristic of the embroidery process. The rug is unmarked.
