An antique Baluch tribal area rug. This hand-knotted wool rug features a rectilinear design in pale madder red, midnight blue, brown, and ivory. It begins with a small rectangular field populated with tree of life figures and other tribal motifs. The field is framed by three wide borders separated with barber pole guard strips accented by ivory X shapes, the primary border containing Yomut-style guls. The rug has double overcast edges and finishes at either end with kilim skirts woven with horizontal bands in different colors and ending in natural wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
