Antique Karabagh Area Rug
Item Details
An antique Karabagh area rug. This hand-knotted Caucasian wool rug is rendered in a palette of sapphire, red, cerulean, and ivory. It features a rectilinear design of five horizontal pole medallions in red, sapphire, and cerulean over a sapphire field. The crenellated medallions contain eagle guls, goats (or gazelles), florets, and other tribal motifs, many of which also appear in the field. Enclosing the field are two unresolved borders, one containing geometric square guls, the guard strip containing florets. The edges retain the remnants of double-overcasting, and the top and bottom finish in loose, natural warp fringe that may include goat or camel hair. The rug is unmarked.
