An original 1974 oil painting on canvas signed in red paint to the lower right by artist Marialuisa Arduino, titled Souk di Chichaoua in Morocco. Skillfully painted in carefully mixed, clean pigments, this plein air painting depicts a small outdoor marketplace suggested in the title, with nomadic farmers and merchants selling various goods under fabric canopies rigged from found materials. Watermelons ripen in the sun to the left, a husband and wife cook potatoes over a small fire near the center, while an anonymous, shrouded figure tends to their wares in the shadows to the right. A donkey grazes in the sun in the near distance. This stunning painting is mounted behind a linen liner and protected behind glass in a beveled wood frame with a distressed gold leaf and silver leaf finish. The verso is marked by the artist with title, date and signature.
Condition
- accretion on liner under glass. Finish of frame is lightly worn. Tear to the lower right portion of the canvas.
