Arthur Helwig Oil Portrait on Canvas of Clown

An oil portrait on canvas mounted to cardboard of a clown, titled ‘Clown’, by notable Cincinnati-based artist Arthur Louis Helwig (1899-1976). This colorful smiling portrait features a frontal view with large eyes, small hat and large ruffled collar. The painting is signed in red to the lower right, and is mounted to card board and presented in a wide frame with antiqued white painted finish with gold trim. To the back is a cut-out of the backing to show title and signature from an earlier gallery display.
Known for his watercolors, oil paintings, prints, and murals, Helwig was an active artist and studied under Theodore Dorl, Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkin. He taught for over four decades and was president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1939 to 1941. His work has been exhibited at numerous art institutions spanning across the including the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Philadelphia Museum, and the Cleveland Art Museum, to name a few.
