A colored pencil group caricature portrait on paper of the University Of Michigan department deans by well-listed cartoonist Sam Viviano (Michigan, b. 1953). The 1986 work depicts various members of the faculty at the Univerity of Michigan, where Viviano graduated summa cum laude with a B.F.A. The work is signed and dated to the lower right corner. Presented under acrylic in a white box frame. To the verso is a frame label.

Persons depicted in the top row, from left to right, are: Terry Sandalow, Harold Johnson, Richard Daughtery, John D’Arms, Bob Metcalf, Jim Duderstadt, and Dick Christensen. Persons in the middle row, from left to right, are: Bill Kelly, Tom Juster, Jim Crowfoot, Gil Whitaker, June Osborn, Bob Warner, Gideon Frieder, and Paul Boylan. Persons in the front row, from left to right, are: Carl Berger, Rhetaugh Dumas, Joe Johnson, Bill Frye, Peter Steiner, Marge Levy, and Ara Paul.

Viviano is known for his caricatures. A fine arts graduate from the University of Michigan, Viviano has worked for Scholastic Magazines, MAD magazine, Rolling Stone, Reader’s Digest, and more. His caricatures are characterized by their large jaws, which are the result of drawing sitters from side and front views.
