Item Details

An oil on canvas portrait of a mariner by German artist Bruno Blätter. It depicts an old man with a white beard and bushy eyebrows smoking a long-stemmed pipe. He is wearing a peaked hat that has a wide brim in back overlapping his collar, typical of those worn by fishermen. The painting is signed B. Blatter to the lower right and mounted in a wood frame finished in silver gilt that is wired for hanging.

Condition

- to fair; craquelure throughout painting; middle section appears to have inpainting or some sort of residue while rest of image is lighter in comparison; verso of canvas is discolored, fraying on edges of stretcher; has original nails; frame does not have glass covering; frame has newer brackets holding stretcher – has been re-framed; old adhesive residue throughout frame verso. no backing paper; frame has scuffs throughout and chipped top/bottom right corners.
