Item Details
A 1909 oil painting on board by Pittsburgh artist Martin B Leisser (American, 1846-1940). This depicts a rocky shore curving across the foreground stretching to right, bordering a wide river, believed to be the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania. Buildings are visible on a finger of land in the distance, underneath a clouding sky. It is signed and dated along the edge of a rock in the lower right ‘M.B Leisser Aug 15, 09’. This work is presented in a gold tone wooden frame, wired for hanging. Born to German immigrant parents, Leisser trained at both the Paris Academie Julian in Paris and the Munich Royal Academy. He later became a significant member of the Pittsburgh and American artworld as a founding member of the Art Society of Pittsburgh, and part of the Fine Arts Committee for the Carnegie Institute.
