Nancy Muller Limited Edition Cut Paper oPit "Cephalopodia"

A limited edition cut paper ‘oPit’ titled Cephalopodia from the series Organic by Nancy Miller (Ohio, 1927-2010). Created in 1978, the work depicts a cephalopod out of numerous layers of hand-cut white rag cover stock paper from the Beckett Paper Company. The artist refers to these layered cut paper works as ‘oPits’, referencing ‘Op Art’. Number 2 in an edition of 9, the work is signed and numbered in graphite to the lower right corner. Encased and presented in a lucite box. To the verso is a descriptive label for cleaning the lucite.

Miller is known for her ‘oPits’, a combination of sculpture and cut paper encased in plexiglass boxes. She received her formal art education from Bennett College in North Carolina and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work was exhibited regularly in her lifetime in numerous galleries, art shows, and more. Her corporate commissions include General Electric, Exxon Mobil, and the set design department for the AMC television program ‘Mad Men’.
