Antique French Barbizon Style Gilt and Gesso Frame
Item Details
An antique French Barbizon style gilt and gesso frame. The outer edge of the frame features a running laurel-and-berry molding surrounding a prominent acanthus foliate molding. The innermost part features a cavetto sight edge surrounded by beaded molding and stepped flat liners. The back edge features a simple rope molding surrounding a cove hollow. Small wood inserts are present along the inner edge, decreasing the rabbit size. A tag is attached to the verso that is stamped ‘Property of Martin Scherer’ and handwriting that reads dimensions.
Condition
- large chip in molding to lower left edge; cracks and small chips throughout molding; chips in molding at corners; stains and discoloration throughout frame; frame corners are detaching and need tightening; holes, chips, scratches, and stains throughout verso.

- measurement of frame; rabbit size measures approximately 11.75"W x 15"H; width of wood inserts measure approximately .25".
