A watercolor and crayon painting on paper titled The Ancient Kingdom by listed artist William A. Lewis (Michigan, 20th / 21st Century). The work depicts an abstracted cityscape with warm watercolors contrasting with cool tones in crayon. Unsigned, the work is titled and dated on a label to the verso. Under a single layer of white mat, the item is presented under glass in a black wood frame.
Lewis is known for his watercolors and paintings. A professor at the University of Michigan, Lewis received his B.A. from the same university in 1948. The artist’s interest in how humans have changed the natural landscape have resulted in a focus on industrial and architectural subjects. He has exhibited in numerous one-man shows throughout his career. His works can be found in public collections at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art, and more.
