William Scott Photolithograph on Arches Paper of Classical Architectural Elements

Item Details

A photolithograph on deckle-edged Arches paper of Classical architectural elements by well-listed artist William Scott (United Kingdom, 1913-1989), published in 1986. In warm tones, the work depicts various sculptures and architectural decorations. Some sprockets from the film strips used can be seen in the composition. To the lower margin, the work is a dedication to Dean Metcalf, signed, and dated by the artist in graphite. Not marked with edition information. Dry mounted onto white backing, the work is presented under acrylic in a silver-tone metal frame.

Scott is well-known for his Abstract Expressionist and still live paintings. He formally studied painting at the Belfast College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. Before World War II, he founded an art school in Pont-Aven, Brittany. However, he abruptly returned to Britain before the war. There, he joined the army and was introduced to printmaking under the Royal Engineers and mapmakers. Scott was a contemporary and acquaintance of artists like Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Elaine de Kooning. Today, his works can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
