The English language first edition is bound in salmon-colored cloth covered boards with red lettering and includes the scarce original dust jacket with the publisher ‘Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc.’ and the address ‘386 Fourth Avenue, New York’, though the jacket is price-clipped. Other distinguishing details include the left-facing rose on page 27 (see image #13) and a five-line colophon in italics (see image #14). Published in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock with no further printing information on the copyright page. A previous owner’s inscription reads ‘Carolyn Lincoln Taylor, From Mother, Graduation from Buckingham, June, 1943’, placing original ownership very close to the original issue date of April 6, 1943.
Also included is a stated second printing, softcover edition of the American-published French-language edition of Le Petit Prince, published by Reynal & Hitchcock, circa 1943. The beloved children’s book was first published in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock in New York, with both an English and a French language edition printed simultaneously. The English-language version was translated from Saint-Exupery’s manuscript by Katherine Woods. The first edition published in France was not released until 1945 by Gallimard.
