An antique first proof chine-collé on paper by listed British artist George Cruikshank (1792-1878). The work, titled Total Abstainer, depicts the virtues of a life of temperance. The print features thirteen illustrated rounded panels, each depicting happy scenes in the lives of those who choose to reject alcohol. A center panel shows Temperance personified as a female figure, standing before an adoring crowd, next to a fountain labeled ‘Health and Happiness’. The piece is signed and titled in plate to the lower center, with an additional graphite signature and the notation of ‘First Proof’ to the lower margin. The print is matted in cream and presented under glass in a wooden frame with hanging tabs to the verso. - to Fair; foxing and discoloration to print and mat; stains along top edge and center of print; print is crooked inside frame; scratching and surface abrasions to frame finish; small tears to mat; wear to frame’s cardboard backing.
