A two volume set entitled Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. Published by Charles L. Webster & Company in New York, Volume I has a 1885 copyright date, and Volume II was copyrighted in 1886. Each is bound in a dark green cloth cover with a gilt medallion featuring Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s image to the front center. A gilt medallion to the back cover is marked Mississippi River. Each volume features a tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Grant, maps, facsimile inscriptions and letters. The Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant is an autobiography of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, focused mainly on his military career during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Written as Grant was dying of cancer in 1885, the two-volume set was published by Mark Twain shortly after Grant’s death.
