Mid-19th Century Thomas Cole Style Gilt and Gesso Frame
Item Details
A mid-nineteenth century Thomas Cole style gilt and gesso frame. Resembling Thomas Cole’s Rococo-revival frame designs, this elaborate floral design consists of large acanthus leaf motifs at the corners and an allover foliate and scroll design. The outer border features a smaller acanthus leaf design. A tag is attached to the verso that is stamped ‘Property of Martin Scherer’ and handwriting that reads ‘Thomas Cole frame, circa 1820-1840’. To the verso, wooden inserts are present in the corners.
Condition
- missing areas of gesso; repaired molding; cracks in gesso; drilled holes throughout the verso; fragile pieces barely attached at edges of molding design.

- measurement of frame; rabbit size measures approximately 32.75"W x 37.75"; wooden inserts at corners measure approximately 3.5"W x 3.5"H each.
