David Farquharson Watercolor Painting on Paper of Landscape

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper of a landscape by well-listed Scottish artist David Farquharson (1839-1907), created in 1879. This work features a creek running through a hilly terrain populated with rocks and some grazing sheep. A single fisherman is visible along the stream and is dwarfed by the vast surroundings that include hazy mountains and a foggy gray sky hovering above. The painting is signed and dated to the lower left. It is mounted on a cardboard surface and remains unframed.

Considered a leading nineteenth-century landscape painter of Scotland, David Farquharson was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Art Academies in Scotland and England. He had a friendly relationship with American painter John Singer Sargent and shared a desire to paint en plein air when possible. His work has been collected by various art institutions including the Tate Museum, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, and the Anthony Wood Gallery, among others.
