Rainbow Pottery Vase
Item Details
A Rainbow Pottery Maui vase. The accompanied paper reads ‘Maui artist Rick Cosci has more than 20 years experience as a Master Potter, working with stonreware, porcelain, and raku. Each vessel is individually crafted on the potter’s wheel, then hand decorated, glazed and fired. Raku pottery was born in 16th century Japan. Valued for the rough yet elegant rhythms of form and color as inspired by nature, this art form became a favorite of Zen Buddhist tea masters. The term ‘raku’ was derived from a Chinese ideogram which means ‘happiness, joy, spontaneity, pleasure’. ‘I strive to communicate my appreciation and respect for Hawaii’s culture and natural beauty by incorporating marine motifs and ancient Hawaaiian petroglyphs (rock carvings) into the imagery and glazing on my pottery. As I work within this tradition, I hope my pottery brings you happiness and joy!’ This philosophy and care is seen in the vase. It has neutral colors of gray and white, having natural and unnatural crazing, and abstractions.
