Seth Thomas #5 Sonora Chime Adamantine Mantel Clock

Item Details

From 1909 through 1923, Seth Thomas offered Sonora chime mantel clocks for sale. This one is the #5 chime clocks and plays Westminister chimes on a nest of 4 bells with 5 hammers. The case is made of Adamantine, a reddish streaked celluloid veneer that was vacuum formed over inexpensive wood and glued together. It was made to look like rosewood. The interior and exterior are in beautiful condition. It has it’s original winding key. The case has a switch on the side to turn the chimes off, if desired. The case is just over 14’ high at the peak, 11’ wide, and 7 1/2’ deep. It has a 4 1/2’ brass face that shows some age. The entire original paper label ‘Directions for Setting Chime Clocks’ is on the back cover. At the bottom of the label it states ‘Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., U.S.A. Established 1813. No 495’. One inside brass plate is stamped ‘Made in America 89 M’, with a second stamped ‘90D’ Near the bottom of the interior edge is a piece of wood stamped ‘SONORA PAT FEB 18 1908’. Another wonderful detail is the interior pendulum weight. It is cast lead with the image of young man in a cap sitting on a picket fence. A beautiful piece!
