1879 Springfield Model 1873 Rifle

A Springfield model 1873 ‘Trapdoor Springfield’ rifle. This .45-70-405 caliber breech-loading model was standard issue for the United States Army from 1873 to c. 1884. The lock of this weapon is marked with a U.S. eagle icon and ‘U. S. Springfield 1873,’ the stock is marked ‘Co. A. 6th Inft.’, the barrel is marked with the initials ‘V P’ and a bell, the band is marked ‘U’, and the left wrist of the stock has a faded cartouche stamp. This rifle’s serial number of 109334 indicates a manufacturing date of 1879.
