Antique 1794 Mezzotint with Hand-coloring
Item Details
An antique late 18th-century mezzotint with hand-coloring titled Winter, published in 1794 by Laurie & Whittle in London for poet James Thomson’s collection of poems titled The Seasons. The title is printed to the lower margin of the print and is accompanied by text from the short poem, ‘On blithesome frolics bent, the youthful swains, While ev’ry work of man is laid at rest, Fond o’er the river crowd, & as they sweep On sounding skates a thousand diff’rent ways, In circling poise, swift as the winds along, The then gay land is madden’d all to joy.’ The image depicts a woman, man, puppy and child, bundled up for the cold, standing on the outskirts of a frozen lake, watching others skate. This work is mounted behind antique hand-rolled glass in an antique wood frame with a black painted finish.
Condition
- age discoloration across print. Finish of frame is notably worn with chips and abrasions throughout.
