A signed oil painting on canvas board landscape by Chauncey Foster Ryder (New York; 1868 – 1949). This piece depicts a tranquil landscape with a small body of water among lush trees and greenery by a line of rocks. This work is illegibly signed by the artist to the lower left corner. Presented without glass, beneath a beige linen mat with a golden tone fillet, housed in an embellished wooden frame with a gilt finish. There is a crafts label affixed to the verso of the canvas board.
Chauncey Foster Ryder was born in Danbury, Connecticut and spent most of his youth in New Haven, Connecticut. While in New Haven he started to gain an interesting in painting. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Smith’s Academy. During 1891 Ryder and his wife sold their belongings and moved to Paris. He continued to study painting at the Academie Julien and after two years started to show his work in the annual Paris Salon. Ryder is known for his artist style and use of the color green. His use and application with the color have been dubbed ‘Ryder green’.
