Antique Handwoven Jaf Kurd Bag Face Wool Accent Rug
Item Details
An antique handwoven Jaf Kurd bag face wool accent rug. The Jaf were a formerly nomadic Kurdish tribe in northern Iran and Iraq. They settled and became agricultural in the late nineteenth century. This rug is one quarter of a traditional saddlebag used during a nomadic past. Jaf bag faces gained popularity and were imported into the United States from 1920-1930. They generally feature a central hooked diamond pattern in dark tones with one or two ivory tone diamonds as you see in this rug. The Jaf used dark tones in their vegetable dyes, such as blacks, indigos and deep reds. There is a change in the quality of weaving at the bottom third of the rug; often a master female weaver would allow her apprentice or child to practice weaving on the part of the saddlebag that would be facing the ground. This part of the rug features novice weaving with bright patches of orange and pink wool. The carpet pile is deep and soft. Features a wool warp fringe to both ends.
