Antoine Louis Romanet 1774 Engraving after Sigmond Freudeberg "Le Bain"

An antique 1774 copper plate engraving with later hand-coloring, engraved by French artist Antoine Louis Romanet (1748 – after 1810) after the original design by Swiss artist Sigmond Freudeberg (1745 – 1801), titled Le Bain. Below the printed title, a French caption reads, ‘De la Lettre ou du Chocolat Que préfére Madame? Ah ma chére Justine, J’ai le coeur bien plus délicat plus foible infiniment, hélas! que la poitrine.’ The image depicts the woman of the house reclining half-dressed on a chaise lounge, smiling upward at her handmaid as she presents her with a cup of warm chocolate and a love letter, playfully asking her which she would prefer. Artist and publishing information and date are printed in fine text to the lower margins of the engraving. This print is mounted under off-white mat, under glass in a beveled wood frame with a distressed gilt finish.
Condition
- age discoloration to print and mat. Finish of frame is chipped and worn throughout.
