Pair of Framed W. Curtis Botanic Garden Magazine Hand-Colored Engravings

Item Details

A pair of framed, hand-colored copperplate octavo engravings from the Botanical Magazine published by horticulture enthusiast William Curtis in the late 18th century. Curtis cultivated thousands of exotic plant and flower species in the garden he built and named ‘Lambeth Marsh’, subsequently creating a two-part series of colored illustrations in an eager effort to share his knowledge and generate patronage. The two botanicals for consideration here are from his sophomore project, Botanical Magazine, which was preceded by his famous folio Flora Londinensis. The prints are titled and dated below image, presented with a green and off-white double mat and housed behind glass inside beveled wood frames with gilt finish. Hardware for hanging is mounted to the reverse of both frames.
