1860 First Edition Second Issue "Marble Faun" by Nathaniel Hawthorne

An 1860 first edition, second issue copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s gothic novel The Marble Faun; or, the Romance of Monte Beni. Set in a picturesque Italian setting an dealing with themes of art and passion as well as murder and mystery, it is a classic of the Romantic genre. Complete in two volumes, published by Ticknor and Fields of Boston and bound in brown cloth blind-stamped hardcovers with gilt spine lettering. Advertisements are from March 1860 indicating that this is the second issue of the first edition. Volume II has a book card of Nathan Appleton (1779-1861), a New England merchant and politician, to the inside of the front board.
