1822 English Translation of "The Lusiad" of Camoens

Item Details

An 1822 hardcover copy of the Lusiad: or The Discovery of India, the epic poem of Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões (1524/5 – 1580), also known in English as Camoens, and translated to English by William Julius Mickle. Considered the national epic of Portugal, Os Lusíadas extols the deeds and journeys of Vasco de Gama, Magellan, and the other great 15th and 16th-century Portuguese navigators, and their adventures in discovering a sea route to India and exploring the New World. In imitation of the Homeric epics, it features the Greco-Roman gods and muses, while also integrating themes of Christianity and the struggles of the Portuguese against Muslim powers. This edition was published in 1822 by Samuel F. Bradford of Philadelphia and has an embossed leather hardcover with gilt accents, and gilt page edges.
