1953 Rookwood Pottery Vase by Rueben Earl Menzel

A signed, 1953 Rookwood Pottery vase bearing the incised mark of master potter Rueben Earl Menzel to bottom. The vase features a simple baluster form with flared lip and rolled foot. The finish is high-gloss having a brownish gold underglaze and light blue to violet gradation to the primary glaze with fantastic dripping at the neck. The RP reverse flame logo and Roman numeral date ‘LIII’ are marked to the underside along with the artists’ three-initial cipher ‘REM’. Menzel decorated Rookwood Pottery from 1896 through the early 1950s and had the longest tenure of any employee in the company’s history, spending 63 years with the firm.
