An 1881 original oil painting on canvas by 19th century Austrian artist A. Rueff. This work depicts a rowboat of struggling men, fighting the waves that crash upon the rock cliff shore. A turreted stone monastery fortress, now a ruin with overgrown vines and open arches, is highlighted in the cool moonlight, as dark clouds billow above. The painting is signed by hand to the lower left corner in paint. This work is presented in a gilt wooden frame with a laurel wreath border and wired to verso for hanging.

- piece of molding missing upper left corner; general wear to frame; abrasions to paint surface at frame edges; photo of signature taken under black light.
