Qing Dynasty Plate Recovered From Geldermalsen Shipwreck and Ming Dynasty Zhangzhou Ware Plate
Item Details
A Chinese Qing dynasty (1644-1911) export ware plate and a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) Zhangzhou ware plate. The larger, Qing dynasty plate is glazed in white and features a central motif with blooming flowers, a small tree, and a scholar’s rock. This plate was recovered from the Geldermalsen shipwreck. The Geldermalsen was a Dutch ship which sank on January 18, 1752 on its way home from a voyage to China, carrying cargo. Also included is a Ming dynasty Zhangzhou ware plate with a spontaneously rendered decoration in blue and white glaze. Zhangzhou ware was produced in southern Chinese kilns and exported to southeast Asia.
Condition
- large plate has a chip to edge, hairline cracks and accretions to underside; smaller plate has a hairline crack; the largest has a growth of barnacles along the underside as well as an encrusted shell and other accretions.
