Circa 1890 Rookwood Pottery Table Lamp by Kataro Shirayamadani

Item Details

A circa 1890 Rookwood Pottery table lamp by Kataro ‘Sherry’ Shirayamadani (1865–1948), the company’s first non-Caucasian artist, who made pottery from 1887 to 1948. The cylindrical vase body features a translucent two-tone light tan to dark brown gradient glaze and hand painted images of freshly caught fish hanging from strings. The vase has an adjustable double-socket post and a stepped brass base. Pulling the base away from the bottom reveals the early four flame Rookwood symbol, Shirayamadani’s signature, and the number 506. Worked upon testing.

Shirayamadani is considered ‘possibly the most recognized name in Rookwood Pottery history’ (see link below). A piece he created won the coveted Grand Prize at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. His works grace museum collections all around the world, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Mint Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Crocker Art Museum.
