Hudson M. Kitchell Oil Painting on Board of Figurative Landscape

Item Details

An oil painting on board of a figurative landscape by well-listed artist Hudson Mindell Kitchell (New York, 1862-1944). With muted greens and yellows, the work depicts a luminescent and tonalist forest scene at dusk. A lone figure stands under a tree to the right of the composition. Signed by the artist to the lower right corner. Presented in a beveled wood frame without glass.

Kitchell was most well-known for his nocturnal landscapes in oil on panel. Little is known about Kitchell’s formal art education. He did have experience as a commercial artist, a paper salesman, an embosser, and professional artist. He was an acquaintance and contemporary with the Tonalist master Ralph Blakelock, with whom he shared a similar style. Kitchell exhibited his works regularly throughout the 1910s and 1920s. Today, his work can be found at the Michigan University Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and others.
