An oil painting on canvas titled Trees at bloom by listed Ohio artist Clarence Holbrook Carter (1904 – 2000), created on 1939. This piece depicts multiple blossomed trees with white flowers and a pair of cardinals flying among greenery. The piece is signed and dated to the lower right corner. Presented without glass, in a wood frame with a gray painted finish. To the verso, an informational and a biographical label from the Cincinnati Arts Galleries are adhered.
Clarence Holbrook Carter (1904 – 2000) is best known for his modernist genre and landscapes oil paintings and watercolors. He began his formal artistic training in his hometown at the Cleveland School of Art in 1923 under the tutelage of William Millikin. Upon graduating, Carter further pursued his artistic career and moved to Italy, refining his technique while continuing his education under the likes of Hans Hofmann. During his life, Carter was an active instructor teaching in several institutions including Cleveland Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, Lehigh University, Ohio University, Atlanta Art institute and the University of Iowa. Additionally, he became a member of the American Water Color Society and subsequently, Vice President of this organization in 1962. His work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Fogg Art Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of American Art and the Chicago Art Institute among many others.
