Francis Seymour Haden Etching on Paper "Dusty Millers"

An etching titled Dusty Millers by well listed English artist and surgeon Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910). This print features a few workers in the field in front of a large estate to the left. A couple men lift bags of grain in a horse-drawn wagon. with large bags of grain. The print is signed by hand in graphite to the lower right. The artist’s in-plate signature and in-plate date, 1877, are present to the lower left. The print is presented under glass in a gold-tone, brown, and black wood frame with off-white matting.

Although he also made a living as a surgeon, Haden was a self-taught artist mostly known for his etchings of country life and landscapes. He was inspired by his famous brother-in-law James McNeill Whistler who collaborated with him on some etchings. Later in life he became the president of the Society of Painters-Etchers, and he was awarded the Grands Prix at the Expositions Universelles at Paris in 1889 and 1900. Haden’s work has been collected by numerous art institutions including the the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, to name a few.
